What is an SEO audit?

An SEO audit is a complete review of your website that identifies what stops it from ranking on Google, then ranks the fixes to make in order of impact. It covers the technical side (what gets in the way of crawling and understanding your pages), content (the queries you are missing) and authority (what is capping your link popularity).

An audit is only worth something if it leads to action. Mine ends with a roadmap ranked by effort-to-gain ratio: you know what to fix first, why, and what each fix can bring in. And since 2025, I systematically add an AI visibility section, because your customers also ask their questions to ChatGPT and Perplexity.

To see what a report looks like, I published an SEO audit example with its 47-point checklist. If your priority is technical, my technical SEO audit checklist details every check. And the audit is part of my SEO consulting services for those who want me to handle the execution.

My approach to the SEO audit

In eight years of SEO, I have read a lot of audits. Most list hundreds of warnings without saying which ones really matter. Mine does the opposite: less noise, more decisions.

01

I prioritize

Every recommendation is scored for effort and expected impact. Quick wins go to the top of the list.

02

I explain

No jargon for its own sake: each issue comes with its cause, its consequence and how to fix it.

03

I make the audit actionable

Your team, your agency or me: anyone should be able to take action right after the debrief.

What's included

What the SEO audit covers:
four analyses, one action plan.

Three analyses to understand where you stand on Google, one section to measure your presence in AI engines, and a roadmap to move forward.

Google struggles to crawl your site

Technical analysis

Full crawl, server logs when available, indexing, speed, structured data, internal linking.

  • Crawl and log file analysis
  • Core Web Vitals and mobile rendering
  • Indexing, sitemap, robots.txt
Your content doesn't rank

Content and keyword analysis

Your content against the real queries in your market: what misses, what cannibalizes, what is missing.

  • Keyword and search intent research
  • Content gap mapping
  • Cannibalization detection
AI engines don't mention you

AI visibility section

What ChatGPT and Perplexity answer on your industry queries, and how AI crawlers see your site.

  • AI answers on your queries
  • AI crawler access
  • First GEO recommendations

Every recommendation is scored for effort and expected impact, then walked through with you by video call.

  • Prioritized roadmap
  • Quick wins identified
  • 90-minute video debrief
Key checkpoints

What the audit checks,
and how I prioritize it.

For each item, the priority I most often give it when it is a problem. In your audit, every action is ranked according to your site, your market and your resources.

Indexing and crawling

High priority

Key pages missing from the index, useless URLs eating up crawl budget, misconfigured robots.txt or sitemap. If Google cannot see a page, nothing else matters.

I deliver the list of affected URLs, grouped by page type, with the expected fix.

Core Web Vitals and mobile rendering

Quick win

Load time, layout stability, responsiveness on mobile. One oversized image or one badly loaded script is often enough to drag down an entire template.

I target fixes by template, not page by page: one change fixes hundreds of URLs.

Cannibalization

High priority

Several of your pages target the same query and compete with each other. The result: Google hesitates, none of them wins, and your rankings fluctuate.

I make the call for each case: merge, redirect or reposition one of the pages.

Internal linking

Quick win

Important pages buried too deep, orphaned or barely linked, generic anchor text. Internal linking is the most underrated lever in SEO, and one of the fastest to fix.

I list the links to add: source page, target page and anchor text.

Content gaps and search intent

Long-term work

The queries your competitors rank for and you do not, the pages that miss the real search intent.

I deliver a map of the content to create or rework, ranked by potential.

Structured data

Quick win

Missing, incomplete or broken markup: you miss out on rich results and make your pages harder for search engines and AI to read.

I specify the markup to add or fix, page type by page type.

Link profile

Market-dependent

Number and quality of the domains linking to you, anchor text distribution, toxic links, gap with your direct competitors.

I tell you whether authority is your real bottleneck, or whether the effort should go elsewhere first.

AI visibility

Get ahead of it

Is your brand cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity on your industry queries? Can AI crawlers read your pages? This section is now included in every audit.

Who it's for

Is an SEO audit right for you?

An audit is useful at a specific moment in a site's life. Here is how to tell whether this is it.

A good fit if

  • Your organic traffic is dropping and you do not know why
  • You are planning a redesign or a migration and want to protect your rankings
  • You are about to invest in SEO and want to know where to spend the budget first
  • Your team or your agency needs a clear roadmap
  • You want to know what AI engines say about you

Not a fit if

  • Your site has just launched and has no data yet
  • You are looking for an 80-page automated report
  • No one will be able to implement the recommendations in the coming months
  • You want a guaranteed #1 ranking
Method

How the SEO audit works

Four steps, two to three weeks depending on the size of the site. The quote always states the timeline.

  1. 1

    The brief

A call to understand your business, your goals, your competitors and the site's history. I collect the access I need: Search Console, Analytics and server logs when available.

  2. 2

    The analysis

Two to three weeks of work: full crawl, technical analysis, keyword research, link profile and AI visibility section. A small business website takes less time than a 40,000-URL ecommerce site.

  3. 3

    The prioritized action plan

Every finding becomes an action, scored for effort and expected impact. Quick wins are set apart so you can get started right away.

  4. 4

    The video debrief

90 minutes to go through the priorities, answer your questions and plan next steps with your team or your agency. You leave with a roadmap, not a report to decode.

SEO audit FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Two to three weeks depending on the size of the site. A small business website takes less time than a 40,000-URL ecommerce site: the quote always states the timeline.

It is up to you: implement it in-house with my roadmap, hand the execution to your agency, or entrust it to me as a monthly retainer. The audit fee is deducted from the first month of the retainer.

Yes, every audit includes a GEO section: what ChatGPT and Perplexity answer on your industry queries, and how AI crawlers see your site.

The price depends on the size and complexity of the site: a small business website does not require the same work as an ecommerce site with several thousand pages. I work on a quote basis, free and sent within 48 hours, and the audit fee is deducted from the first month of the retainer if you hire me for what comes next.

When a decision is about to be made: before a redesign or a migration, after an unexplained traffic drop, before launching a content or link building strategy, or when you change providers. An audit done in a vacuum, with no project behind it, is worth much less.

At a minimum, read access to Search Console and to your analytics tool. Server logs are a plus when available, especially on large sites. I do not need any write access to your site to carry out the audit.

Free tools are useful for a first diagnosis, but they list warnings without ranking them or taking your market into account. An audit carried out by a consultant sorts out what really matters, explains why and ends with a prioritized action plan your team can apply.
