Answer Engine Optimization (AEO): Definition and Method

Answer engine optimization (AEO) optimizes your content so it gets picked up in the answers of Google, ChatGPT or Perplexity. Here is what AEO means, how it differs from SEO and GEO, then the six writing rules I apply to make content citable.

AI summary

Answer engine optimization (AEO) optimizes content so an answer engine picks it up: Google featured snippets, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity. The unit of work is the passage: the answer in the first sentence, one idea per block, headings phrased as questions, dated and attributed facts. It extends SEO without replacing it.

Summary written from the article.

AEO, short for answer engine optimization, means optimizing content so that an answer engine reuses it in its answer, instead of just ranking it in a list of links. It targets Google featured snippets, AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and voice assistants. In practice, it comes down to writing blocks that answer a specific question, make sense out of context and rest on verifiable information.

The acronym has been everywhere since generated answers arrived, often mixed up with GEO. I start with the definition and the differences, then the practical core: the writing rules I apply to get content picked up, a checklist to rework your existing pages and how to measure the results.

6 rules

AEO in 30 seconds

An answer engine does not read your page like a reader does: it extracts passages from it. The deciding test fits in one line: take a paragraph out of your page and read it on its own. If it is still clear and useful, it is citable. If it starts with "That is why" or refers back to what came before, it is not.

  • The answer in the first sentence
  • One idea per block, understandable on its own
  • A heading that contains the question asked
  • Dated and attributed information
  • Transitions that make a paragraph depend on the previous one
  • General claims with no proof

Key takeaways

  • AEO (answer engine optimization) optimizes content so it gets reused in an answer, not just ranked in a list of links.
  • The unit of work is no longer the page but the passage: each block must stand on its own.
  • The answer comes before the argument, and dated, attributed information is preferred to a general claim.
  • AEO does not replace SEO: Google states that no special optimization is needed for its AI features, beyond a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet.
  • The content that gets reused most brings a piece of data nobody else has.

What is AEO? Meaning and definition

Answer engine optimization, abbreviated AEO, covers the techniques that get content reused by answer engines. An answer engine is a system that returns a written answer directly rather than a list of links: the featured snippet at the top of Google ("position zero"), an AI Overview, an answer from ChatGPT or Perplexity, a voice assistant.

The term appeared in the mid-2010s, with featured snippets and voice search: an assistant reading an answer out loud only reads one. AI-generated answers broadened the subject without changing the principle. The engine no longer ranks you, it cites you, or it cites someone else.

Not to be confused with

AEO also stands for Authorized Economic Operator, a customs status: a certification for companies involved in international trade. Nothing to do with search.

How an answer engine chooses a passage

The mechanism explains every rule that follows. When an answer engine handles a question, it often runs several related searches: Google calls this technique "query fan-out" for its AI Overviews and AI Mode. It retrieves pages, extracts the fragments that answer best, then recombines them with fragments from other sources to write its answer.

Content optimized for AEO is therefore content designed to survive this cutting up. It follows the logic of a wire story, where any paragraph can be cut without the text becoming incomprehensible. There is nothing new about this format: it has simply changed audiences.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO: what is the difference?

The three acronyms describe related goals, on surfaces that overlap.

In reality, AEO is not a discipline separate from SEO. Google says so in its documentation: there are no additional requirements and no special optimization to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and that is all. AEO is the part of SEO that works on extracting the passage; generative engine optimization (GEO) adds brand reputation outside your site. I have detailed the real gaps in my GEO vs SEO comparison.

What Google says, in black and white

In its guide to optimizing for generative AI, updated on July 10, 2026, Google states that you do not need to break content into small chunks or write in a particular way for its AI features: its systems understand a page that covers several topics. The rules that follow are therefore not tricks for machines. They are rules of clear writing, which serve the reader first, and which matter even more for engines that extract passages, such as ChatGPT or Perplexity.

How to write content that answer engines pick up

Here are the six rules of citable content, the ones I apply to every page I write or rework.

1. Answer before you argue

The first sentence contains the answer. Not a hook, not context, not a rhetorical question: the answer.

In practice, restate the question as a statement and complete it. The rest of the text expands, nuances and proves. It is the opposite of what school teaches, and it is what makes the difference.

2. One idea per block

A paragraph covers a single thing. As soon as there is a "besides" or an "also", a second paragraph begins.

This rule has a happy side effect: it makes the text more readable for humans too. Short blocks on a single idea are easier to scan, and scanning is the dominant way of reading on screen.

3. Headings that contain the question

Ban creative headings. "The heart of the matter" tells a machine looking for a match with a question nothing. "How much does an SEO audit cost" tells it everything.

A good section heading could be used as a search query as is. That is the quickest way to check.

4. Add numbers, dates and sources

Verifiable information gets reused; a general claim gets pushed aside. The difference between "lead times are often long" and "allow four to eight weeks, the lead time I observed on my projects in 2026" decides everything.

Three elements to provide every time: the figure, the date it was measured and where it comes from. If it comes from you, say so: that is even better, because the data then cannot be found anywhere else.

5. Remove the transitions that create dependency

"That is why", "indeed", "as we have seen", "thus": these phrases tie a paragraph to the previous one, which makes it incomprehensible once extracted.

The fix is mechanical: reread the start of each paragraph and delete anything that assumes you have read what came before. The text loses a little flow and gains a lot of robustness.

6. Bring what nobody else has

This is the rule that matters most in the medium term. Content that rephrases what already exists has no reason to be preferred over the twenty others saying the same thing.

What cannot be made up: your own measurements, your real cases, the objections you hear in meetings, the mistakes you have made. It is the only material a machine cannot generate, and therefore the most valuable.

The most important block on a page is its first paragraph. Build yours: enter the question and your three elements of the answer, and the tool assembles a paragraph structured to be extracted and flags what is missing.

Citing your sources: the reliability signal

A seemingly minor question that turns out to be decisive: citing properly increases your chances of being cited in turn. Answer engines assess how reliable a page is, and a page that backs its claims with identifiable sources inspires more trust than a page that asserts without showing anything.

  • Name the source in the text, not just in a link. "According to Google's documentation" is more usable than a bare link on a word.
  • Date the source. Undated data is useless to an engine looking for up-to-date information.
  • Prefer the primary source. Cite the study or the official documentation, not the article commenting on it.
  • Own your data. "On the audits I ran this year" is a source, and even the best one, because it is unique.
  • Separate fact from opinion. A reader and a model alike must be able to tell the two apart.

The reflex that changes everything

Before publishing, ask yourself: what does this content bring that a reader would not find in the top five results? If you cannot find anything in ten seconds, the text is not ready.

Does structured data help AEO?

Less than many people think. Google states that no special file, no AI markup and no particular structured data is needed to appear in its AI features. And since May 2026, Google no longer shows FAQ rich results at all in its search results, after restricting them to government and health websites in 2023.

Markup still has two uses. It clearly describes who publishes and who writes (Organization, Person, Article), which helps tie the content to an identifiable entity. And FAQPage markup remains valid and risk-free, provided it matches word for word a FAQ visible on the page. It never replaces a well-built text.

Who is most likely to get picked up

For content of equal quality, some profiles have an edge. Better to know it so you can compensate if you are not one of them.

  • Recognized sources in the industry. Institutions, trade associations, reference publishers. They start with a head start.
  • Identifiable authors. A name, a verifiable background, other publications elsewhere. It is within everyone's reach, and widely underused.
  • Sites that publish original data. A study, even a modest one, gets picked up far beyond its direct audience.
  • Pages that answer head-on. Including small sites, when their page is better built than a big player's.

The last point is the good news for a small business: on a specific question, the size of the site does not decide. A tradesperson who publishes a clear page on the cost of a job can be cited ahead of a big chain whose page is a sales pitch. For ChatGPT in particular, crawler access and presence on third-party sites matter as much as the writing: that is the subject of my guide to ChatGPT SEO.

AEO checklist: reworking existing content

The method I apply to make an already published article citable. Allow twenty minutes per page.

  1. Identify the question the page answers. Just one. If you find three, the page may need to be split.
  2. Rewrite the first paragraph so it contains the complete answer, in two sentences.
  3. Rework the headings so they ask explicit questions, phrased like a search.
  4. Hunt down transitions at the start of paragraphs.
  5. Add a dated, attributed fact to each important section.
  6. Turn comparisons into tables and enumerations into lists.
  7. Add a FAQ with the side questions your customers actually ask, with answers of two to four sentences.
  8. Check the author and the date: a name, a visible update, a page that presents who you are.

This sequence also improves traditional SEO, because the same qualities serve both channels. There are not two ways of writing, there is one better than the other: it is the same logic as in my SEO writing method.

Three examples, before and after

The rule is easier to understand once applied. Here are three real paragraphs I reworked, with what changed.

A service page introduction

Before: "Today, digital is transforming every industry, and it is becoming essential for businesses to think about their online visibility. It is in this context that an SEO audit takes on its full meaning."

After: "An SEO audit analyzes a website to identify what keeps it from being found on search engines. It covers four areas: technical, content, popularity and experience. Allow three to five days for a 500-page site."

The answer is there from the first sentence, a figure appears, and no filler phrase remains. The text is shorter and says far more.

A section heading

Before: "The heart of the matter". After: "How much does an SEO audit cost".

The first matches no query. The second could be typed as is into a search engine, and that is exactly the test to apply to each of your headings.

A dependent paragraph

Before: "That is why it is important to choose carefully. Indeed, as we have seen, this criterion determines what comes next."

After: "The topical relevance of the linking site is the first quality criterion for a link. A link from a site in your industry is worth more than ten general links."

The first excerpt is unusable out of context: there is no way to know what it is about or which criterion it means. The second makes sense on its own, and can therefore be cited as is.

How to measure AEO results

There is no single dashboard. I combine four sources.

  • Search Console. Clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are counted in the Performance report, under the "Web" search type, without being broken out. Above all, track the pages you reworked, before and after.
  • A question panel. Twenty to thirty of your customers' questions, asked every month to ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google in a private window, with a record of the cited sources. It is the method I detail to measure your brand's visibility in AI.
  • Referral traffic. In Google Analytics, visits from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai show up as session sources.
  • A free first diagnosis. HubSpot's AEO Grader asks ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini about your brand. Useful for a baseline snapshot, not for tracking.

If you want this tracking done for you, with a comparison against your competitors, that is the scope of my AI visibility audit.

AEO mistakes to avoid

  • Writing for the machine. Texts stuffed with artificial phrasing get spotted and serve no one. Citable content is useful content first.
  • Over-chunking. A string of isolated sentences with no connection becomes unreadable for a human. The goal is self-contained blocks, not the absence of links between them.
  • Piling up artificial FAQs. A FAQ that asks questions nobody asks is filler, and marking up a FAQ that is not visible on the page is a mistake.
  • Confusing citable with short. Content can be long and perfectly citable, as long as it is structured.
  • Publishing without adding anything. It is the most common flaw since producing text stopped costing anything.

Writing for AEO does not mean writing flat. You can keep your voice, your turns of phrase, your point of view: they are actually what makes the content irreplaceable. What changes is the architecture that carries them.

Frequently asked questions

What is AEO?

AEO, short for answer engine optimization, means optimizing content so that an answer engine reuses it in its answer: a Google featured snippet, an AI Overview, ChatGPT, Perplexity or a voice assistant. It consists of writing blocks that answer a specific question, make sense out of context and rest on verifiable information.

What does AEO mean in SEO?

In SEO, AEO stands for answer engine optimization. The acronym refers to working on the passages of a page so they get extracted and cited, not just on the page's ranking. Outside search, AEO also refers to a customs status, the Authorized Economic Operator.

What is the difference between AEO and SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page in search results; AEO aims to get a passage from that page reused in an answer. The two overlap heavily: Google states that no special optimization is needed for its AI features, beyond a page that is indexed and eligible for a snippet. AEO is the part of SEO that works on extraction.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO works on the passage so it gets reused in an answer, whatever the engine. GEO (generative engine optimization) targets generative AI such as ChatGPT, Perplexity or Gemini, and adds brand reputation on other sites to the writing work. In practice, the two terms are often used interchangeably.

How do I optimize content for AEO?

Six rules: answer in the first sentence, cover one idea per block, write headings that contain the question asked, put a number, a date and a source behind every piece of information, remove the transitions that make a paragraph depend on the previous one, and bring a piece of data nobody else has. Allow twenty minutes to rework an existing page.

Do I need structured data for AEO?

It is not necessary. Google states that no particular structured data is required for its AI features, and it has not shown FAQ rich results since May 2026. Markup is still useful to identify the author and the publisher, and FAQPage markup remains valid if it matches a FAQ visible on the page.

How do I measure AEO results?

Combine Search Console, which counts clicks from AI Overviews within Web traffic, a panel of questions asked to answer engines every month with a record of the cited sources, and traffic from chatgpt.com or perplexity.ai in Google Analytics. No single tool gives a complete measurement.

What is citable content?

Citable content is content a machine can cut up without distorting it: each block answers a specific question, makes sense out of context and rests on verifiable information. It is not a matter of style but of structure, close to that of a wire story.
