Claude vs ChatGPT: the two are on par for most everyday work (writing, summarizing, explaining, short coding tasks). Three use cases genuinely separate them: long documents favor Claude, while images and the free version favor ChatGPT. The rest comes down to the interface, the price and the tools you already use.
I pay for both and I work with both. Here is the comparison table, checked on October 7, 2026 against Anthropic's and OpenAI's official pages, then my verdict use case by use case, without the usual false balance of comparison articles.

The verdict in one minute
Claude for large volumes of text, coding and plain writing. ChatGPT for images, the most generous free version and the €8 plan. Everywhere else, it is a draw.
- Claude: up to one million tokens of context, Claude Code included from Pro
- ChatGPT: images, unlimited text conversations on Free
- Both: web search, agents, memory, voice mode
- Claude does not generate images
- ChatGPT Free caps context at 27,000 tokens in instant mode
Paid entry point: $20 excl. tax (Claude Pro) vs €23 incl. VAT (ChatGPT Plus, France) Checked on October 7, 2026
Key takeaways
- Claude vs ChatGPT: for everyday tasks, they are on par. Three use cases decide it: long documents, images, the free version.
- Context: Claude goes up to one million tokens on every plan; ChatGPT gives 27,000 to 128,000 tokens in instant mode depending on the plan.
- Images: Claude does not generate any. If that is your main use, pick ChatGPT.
- Free: ChatGPT offers unlimited text conversations with GPT-5.6 Luna; Claude Free works with allowances that reset every five hours.
- Coding and agents: Claude Code and Codex are both included in the subscriptions; Claude and ChatGPT Work can both run long tasks on your files.
Answer three questions and the tool picks for your profile and explains why. For some profiles it calls a tie, and that is a result in itself.
Claude or ChatGPT: the verdict by use case
| Use case | My pick | Why |

| Web research | Tie, ChatGPT on Free | Deep research available without a subscription |
| Agents, long tasks | Tie | Claude and ChatGPT Work cover the same ground |
| Everyday questions | Tie | No noticeable difference |
Free version: ChatGPT has the edge
This is the clearest change of 2026. ChatGPT's free plan offers unlimited text conversations with GPT-5.6 Luna, subject to anti-abuse measures; only the tools (files, images, voice, data analysis) remain capped. Claude Free gives access to Sonnet and Haiku with an allowance that resets over a five-hour window: plenty for a few exchanges a day, but you will end up hitting the limit message if you use it heavily. I covered these caps and the tricks to push them back in Claude AI for free.
A useful nuance: Claude's free version already offers a large context window, file creation and connectors. To analyze a long document without paying, it remains the better of the two.
Long documents: Claude has the edge
Claude advertises up to one million tokens of context depending on the model, on every plan. For ChatGPT, the pricing page lists 27,000 tokens in instant mode for the free plan, 54,000 for Go and Plus, 128,000 for Pro, and 256,000 to 400,000 in thinking mode.
In practice: handing over a two-hundred-page report for analysis in one go works in one case and requires splitting it up or using thinking mode in the other. If you work on contracts, reports, large exports or document libraries, this point alone settles the question. If you ask short questions, it does not concern you.
Images: ChatGPT, hands down
ChatGPT generates images, with volumes ranging from limited (Free) to unlimited (Pro). Claude analyzes an image you give it but does not create one: it produces diagrams, charts and mockups in code, and Claude Design is for designing slide decks or prototypes, not photos or illustrations. If your work revolves around visuals, the comparison ends here.
Claude vs ChatGPT for coding: Claude, narrowly
The contract argument is gone: Claude Code is included from Claude Pro, and Codex is included in ChatGPT Plus, with even limited access on Free. So the choice comes down to how you work. Mine leans toward Claude Code, which works in my terminal, reads my files and runs my commands; the guide to installing Claude Code explains how to get started. If your team already lives in Codex, the switching cost probably outweighs the gain.
Writing: a matter of taste
This is subjective and I own it: Claude's texts usually need less work to strip out the hype, the superlatives and the empty transitions. Others prefer ChatGPT's more showy style. Have both write the same text on one of your topics and see which one needs the fewest edits. That ten-minute test beats every comparison article.
Agents and long tasks: a close match
Both companies made the same bet in 2026. In July, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work, an agent that acts in your apps and files for hours. In September, Anthropic started merging its Claude Cowork agent into the chat, starting with the Pro and Max plans: Claude decides on its own whether to answer or carry out a complete task (report, spreadsheet, slide deck), and can schedule it. Both are reserved for paid plans for any serious use.
Claude vs ChatGPT pricing: the plans side by side
| Tier | Claude (excl. tax, in US dollars) | ChatGPT (incl. VAT, in euros, France) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0, 5-hour allowances | €0, unlimited text with GPT-5.6 Luna |
| Mid-tier | No equivalent | Go: €8 per month, may include ads |
| Paid entry point | Pro: $20 per month, $17 billed annually | Plus: €23 per month |
| Heavy use | Max 5x: $100 per month | Pro 100: €103 per month |
| Very heavy use | Max 20x: $200 per month | Pro 200: €229 per month |
| Maximum | No equivalent | Pro 500: €510 per month |
The structure is very similar: an entry point around twenty, a tier around one hundred, another around two hundred. Three real differences. ChatGPT offers Go at €8, which may include ads, whereas Claude has nothing between Free and Pro. Claude offers an annual discount on Pro. And ChatGPT adds a €510 tier for extreme usage. Each Claude plan, with what it unlocks, is covered in my guide to the Claude subscription.
Where Claude and ChatGPT are truly on par
This is the part comparison articles skip, because it does not make a good headline.
- Everyday questions: writing an email, summarizing a text, explaining a concept, translating, rephrasing. The difference is imperceptible.
- Coding on short tasks: writing a function, fixing a known bug, explaining a piece of code. The gap only shows on long, autonomous tasks.
- Structured reasoning: analyzing a situation, building an argument. The rankings that separate them flip with each release, several times per quarter in 2026.
My conviction after two years of daily use of both: for most users, the choice does not come down to capability. It comes down to the interface, the tools already in place, and whether one specific use, images or long documents, settles it on its own.
Claude or ChatGPT by job role
For a developer
Both entry-level subscriptions include a coding agent. Try Claude Code and Codex for a week each on your real repository; the tool you open by reflex will beat the slightly better tool you have to remember to open.
For a consultant or advisory role
Claude has the edge, because of the volume of documents. Analyzing reports, comparing contract versions, digesting exports: these are exactly the cases where the context window decides it. It is my main use, and it is why Claude became my default tool.
For marketing and communications
ChatGPT has the edge, for images. Producing a visual, adapting a format, illustrating a post: it all happens in the same interface. On pure writing, preference is a matter of taste.
For legal and finance roles
Claude has the edge on raw capability, for the same document-related reason. But the deciding question is about the contract terms, data location and compliance commitments. Those criteria are handled at the business-plan level (Claude Team or Enterprise, ChatGPT Business or Enterprise), and they can reverse the ranking.
For personal use
ChatGPT has the edge if you do not want to pay: unlimited text for free is hard to beat. If you are willing to pay for an entry-level subscription, take the one whose interface you like. At that level of use, the difference in capability is not noticeable.
What I check before recommending one or the other
When a company asks me to make the call, I do not look at performance rankings. I ask five questions, in this order.
- How much text do you process in one go? Beyond a few dozen pages on a regular basis, the context question decides it.
- Do you produce images? If so, and you only want one subscription, the question is settled.
- Which tools do your teams work in? Claude and ChatGPT both connect to Microsoft 365, Google Drive, Slack and others. A tool plugged in where people already work will get used; one more browser tab will be forgotten within three weeks.
- Who needs to approve the contract? If a legal team or IT department has to sign off, start there. A technical choice that fails the compliance review costs you three months.
- What is your real budget per user? Not the price of one subscription, but what you are willing to pay for a hundred people.
In practice, the first three questions are enough in most cases. And the answer regularly points to both: one subscription for most people, the other for a few profiles. When these tools then need to run inside your processes, that is the subject of my AI automation engagements.
Claude vs ChatGPT: the data question
With both companies, your conversations can be used to train the models on consumer plans, and a setting lets you opt out. At Claude, since the terms update announced on August 28, 2025, training only applies if the setting is turned on; retention then goes up to five years, versus 30 days otherwise. Both companies' business plans follow different rules, set by contract.
My advice, valid on both sides: read the clause that applies to your plan once, save a copy and check the setting in your account. A quarter of an hour is enough, and it replaces six months of guesswork in meetings.
Should you get both subscriptions?
That is what I do. The cost of two entry-level subscriptions is modest compared to the time saved, and it saves you from choosing blindly on criteria that shift every quarter.
The split that took hold for me, without my planning it in advance: Claude for everything involving long text, code and content production; ChatGPT for images, exploratory research and for checking an output when the first one seems off. The same prompts work on both: nothing in a good prompt is specific to one or the other.
What this comparison does not tell you
The figures in this article were checked on October 7, 2026. In 2026, Anthropic and OpenAI each released several model generations within a few months: this table has a shelf life of a few months, and I keep it updated.
Finally, these two companies partly come from the same teams: Anthropic was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI staff. The story is told from Anthropic's side in Claude AI origins, and from OpenAI's side in who created ChatGPT.
Frequently asked questions
Is Claude better than ChatGPT?
Neither wins across the board. For everyday tasks, they are on par. Claude takes the lead on long documents thanks to its one-million-token context window; ChatGPT wins on images and on the free version, which offers unlimited text conversations.
What is the difference between Claude and ChatGPT?
Claude is built by Anthropic and ChatGPT by OpenAI, two San Francisco companies. Claude handles much longer documents in one go but does not generate images. ChatGPT generates images, offers an €8 plan and a free version with no limit on text messages.
Why use Claude instead of ChatGPT?
For three main reasons: analyzing long documents without splitting them up, coding with Claude Code, included from the Pro subscription, and getting plainer writing that needs less editing. If you produce images, you still need ChatGPT.
Is Claude free like ChatGPT?
Yes, both have a free version, but with different limits. ChatGPT Free offers unlimited text conversations with GPT-5.6 Luna. Claude Free gives access to Sonnet and Haiku with an allowance that resets every five hours.
How much do Claude and ChatGPT cost?
Claude Pro costs $20 per month excl. tax, or $17 billed annually, and Max costs $100 or $200 excl. tax. In France, ChatGPT costs €8 incl. VAT for Go, €23 for Plus, and €103, €229 or €510 for the three Pro tiers. Prices checked on October 7, 2026.
Can Claude generate images?
No. Claude analyzes the images you give it and produces diagrams, charts or mockups in code, but no photos or illustrations. ChatGPT generates images, with volumes that depend on the plan.
Claude Code or Codex: which one is included in the subscription?
Both. Claude Code is included in every paid Claude plan and shares their usage limits. Codex is included in ChatGPT Plus and Pro, with limited access on the free version.
Which AI is best: ChatGPT, Gemini or Claude?
There is no best AI in absolute terms: rankings flip with every model release. The right choice depends on your main use case and your tools, with Gemini mostly worth it if you already work in Google Workspace. Between Claude and ChatGPT, long documents, images and budget are usually enough to decide.
