Key takeaways
- A freelance SEO consultant in France charges an average of €281 (beginner) to €592 (more than 15 years of experience) per day, according to Malt's rate barometer.
- An SEO audit costs €500 for a small site up to €10,000 for a large e-commerce site (Codeur.com): site size and depth of analysis set the price.
- A monthly SEO retainer with an agency usually costs €800 to €1,700 excl. VAT per month (La Fabrique du Net).
- To compare quotes, the right metric is the cost per actual working day, not the total amount.
- No ranking guarantee is serious: Google itself states that no one can guarantee the top spot.
SEO prices can vary tenfold for services that carry the same name. An "SEO audit" can be a ten-page automated export or three weeks of analysis; a "monthly retainer" can hide two hours of work or four days. The ranges below come from public sources, cited on every line, and they describe the French market, where I work. They describe the market, not my own rates: I price my work on a quote basis, as my pricing page explains.
I have been an independent SEO consultant for eight years. Beyond the numbers, here is what I would look at first if I had to compare SEO quotes myself.
SEO pricing: market rates in 2026
Amounts excluding VAT, collected in October 2026 from the sources listed. They are averages or core-market figures for France: a specific project can fall outside them, in either direction.
| Service | Observed range | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Freelance SEO consultant, day rate | €281 (0 to 2 years of experience), €364 (3 to 7 years), €497 (8 to 15 years), €592 (more than 15 years) | Malt rate barometer |
| SEO services, hourly rate | From €75 to more than €200 per hour | SEO.fr |
| SEO audit | From €500 for a small site to €10,000 for a large e-commerce site | Codeur.com |
| One-off agency SEO audit | Usually €1,500 to €3,000 (diagnosis, report, recommendations) | La Fabrique du Net |
| Monthly SEO retainer | €800 to €1,700 excl. VAT per month, the agency core market | La Fabrique du Net |
| Agency SEO project, total budget | Median of €5,000, core market €2,500 to €10,500 | La Fabrique du Net, 683 budgets |
| Link building, sponsored article | From a few dozen to several hundred euros per link, depending on the site's authority and topic | Prices listed on link building marketplaces |
Above all, remember the gaps. La Fabrique du Net, a French agency directory that analyzed 683 SEO project budgets declared by agencies, measured a ratio of one to fourteen between a one-off local project and a year-long retainer for a large account. A price on its own means nothing until you know what it buys.
SEO audit cost: why €500 to €10,000
The cost of an SEO audit follows the time spent, and the time depends on four things.
- Site size. A twenty-page brochure site and an e-commerce store with tens of thousands of products need neither the same crawl nor the same time spent analyzing page templates.
- Scope. Technical only, or technical, content, authority and competition. An audit that adds server log analysis, content cannibalization or visibility in AI answers costs more, and it tells you a lot more.
- The deliverable. A list of issues exported from a tool, or an action plan prioritized by impact, sized by effort and walked through with you in person. Both are called an "audit".
- The provider. A freelancer and an agency do not charge the same day rate, and experience matters more for diagnosis than for any other service.
An audit at a few hundred euros can suit a small site, as long as you know what it contains. With no budget at all, you can run a first diagnosis yourself with free tools, as I show in my free SEO audit guide. To see what a full audit looks like, read my sample SEO audit report; for a local business, my local SEO audit checklist.
Judge an audit by its last page. If it does not end with a list of fixes ranked by impact, you are paying for an observation, not a diagnosis. La Fabrique du Net makes the same point from another angle: an audit that leads to no action is wasted budget. That is why my SEO audit ends with a roadmap ranked by effort versus gain.
Freelance SEO consultant rates
The barometer published by the freelance platform Malt gives average day rates in France of €281 for a junior SEO consultant (0 to 2 years of experience), €364 from 3 to 7 years, €497 from 8 to 15 years and €592 beyond that. These are averages declared on the platform: highly specialized profiles (large site migrations, international SEO, high-volume e-commerce) charge more.
Two things to keep in mind when you read a day rate. First, it does not compare to a salary: a freelancer pays their overheads out of it, along with periods without a client and the sales time they bill to no one. Second, the day rate matters less than the number of days. A consultant at €600 who fixes the problem in three days costs less than one at €350 who takes ten.
A freelance SEO consultant has one decisive advantage: you talk to the person who does the work. The limit is the flip side, since their output is that of one person. That is the model I chose, and I describe it on my SEO consultant page.
Freelancer, agency or in-house hire: what you pay for
| Option | Usual billing | Its advantage | Its limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Independent consultant | Day rate, fixed-price audit, monthly fee | You talk to the person doing the work | The capacity of a single person |
| Agency | Fixed price, subscription, dedicated team | Volume and a range of skills | Your contact is sometimes not the person doing the work |
| In-house hire | Salary and payroll costs | Deep knowledge of your business | A fixed cost and a single profile |
According to La Fabrique du Net, SEO agencies mostly sell fixed-price projects, then dedicated teams and subscriptions. For a small business getting started, I recommend beginning with an audit: you will know whether your problem is technical, editorial or a matter of authority, and you will choose what comes next with your eyes open rather than signing twelve months blind.
What drives the price of SEO services
La Fabrique du Net lists five factors: duration, company size, industry, region and the services included. In practice, they translate like this.
- How competitive your keywords are. Ranking for "divorce lawyer Paris" takes more content and links than ranking for "carpenter Saint-Lô".
- The state of the site. A healthy site can be worked on straight away; a site that needs a migration, has been penalized or is badly built needs repairs first.
- Scope. Technical, content, link building, local SEO, AI visibility: each workstream adds days.
- Production volume. Four articles a month do not cost the price of one.
- Who does the work. A provider who recommends costs less than one who makes the fixes, but then someone on your side has to apply the recommendations.
- Contract length. SEO pays off over several months. A short commitment costs less, but rarely leaves time to measure anything.
What an SEO service should include
An SEO audit
- A technical diagnosis: crawling, indexing, speed, structured data, internal linking.
- An analysis of your content against the actual searches in your market.
- An assessment of authority (links) and a comparison with your competitors.
- An action plan prioritized by impact and effort, presented and explained.
A monthly retainer
- The time actually spent on your account each month, in days or hours.
- What gets done, not just recommended: fixes, content, optimizations.
- Reporting tied to your goals (leads, sales), not just rankings.
- Clear exit terms, and access and content that remain yours.
A link building campaign
- The list of target or acquired sites, with the selection criteria: topic, real traffic, editorial quality.
- The link buying budget kept separate from fees, approved before each expense.
- Links that comply with Google's rules, which penalize artificial link schemes.
The method and the criteria for choosing sites are covered in my link building strategy guide.
How to compare SEO quotes
Three quotes for "an SEO retainer" can have almost nothing in common. To compare them, bring them down to the same unit.
- Work out the cost per actual day. The total amount divided by the number of working days included. If the quote does not give that number, ask for it: the answer, or the lack of one, already tells you something.
- List the deliverables. Action plan, fixes carried out, content produced, links acquired, reports. If it is not written down, it is not owed.
- Check who does the work. Will the person you met in the sales meeting actually work on your account?
- Separate third-party costs. Link buying, tools, outsourced writing: these budgets must appear on their own lines.
- Read the exit terms. Minimum term, notice period, what happens to content and links if you stop.
The comparison tool below does this calculation for three quotes, positions each day cost against market averages and flags what is missing as well as the red flags.
Red flags before you sign
- The ranking guarantee. Google says it in its own advice on hiring an SEO: no one can guarantee a number one ranking in its results. Such a promise covers either a keyword with no competition, or nothing at all.
- The special relationship with Google. Google itself lists this claim among the warning signs. The Google Partners program is about Google Ads advertising, not organic search.
- Refusing to explain the method. "That's our secret sauce" often means there is no method, or that it would not stand up to scrutiny.
- The suspiciously low price. At a few hundred euros a month, very few real days of work are possible. What you get is often automated reports and low-quality links.
- Links by the hundred. Google lists among its warning signs the provider who boasts about mass link exchanges, and its spam policies target artificial links.
- No questions about your business. A provider who does not ask how you make money cannot prioritize properly.
The automated report trap
Some low-cost services boil down to a monthly export generated by a tool, dressed up with a logo. The test is simple: ask the provider what they recommend doing first, and why that rather than something else. An automated report cannot answer that question.
Five questions to ask before you hire an SEO consultant
- "Show me a client case with the numbers, the time period and the context." A rising curve with no dates or context proves nothing: growing traffic on a new site and recovering it after a penalty are two different jobs.
- "What will you do in the first thirty days?" The answer should be specific and start with a diagnosis. A provider who promises ten articles in the first week has not looked at your site yet.
- "What won't you do?" A good consultant has clear limits and can tell you when a project is not worth the investment.
- "How will you measure results?" Rankings alone are not enough. There has to be a link to inbound leads or revenue.
- "What happens if I stop?" You must get back your access, your content and your deliverables. Any engineered dependency is a red flag.
Add a sixth one, specific to 2026: how the provider uses AI in their work, and how they measure your visibility in answer engines. Part of the execution can now be automated, and you should not pay top rates for what a tool produces in a few minutes. I explain this split of tasks in SEO and AI.
Frequently asked questions
How much do SEO services cost?
It depends on the type of service. In France, an SEO audit costs €500 for a small site up to €10,000 for a large e-commerce site, a monthly agency retainer usually runs €800 to €1,700 excl. VAT per month, and a freelance consultant charges an average of €281 to €592 per day depending on experience. These ranges come from Codeur.com, La Fabrique du Net and the Malt barometer.
How much does an SEO audit cost?
From €500 for a small site to €10,000 for a large e-commerce site according to Codeur.com, and most often €1,500 to €3,000 for a one-off agency audit according to La Fabrique du Net. The gap comes down to site size, the scope analyzed and the deliverable. A good audit ends with a prioritized action plan, not a list of issues.
What is the day rate of a freelance SEO consultant?
According to Malt's barometer, the average day rate of a freelance SEO consultant in France ranges from €281 with less than 2 years of experience to €592 beyond 15 years, with €497 between 8 and 15 years. Highly specialized profiles charge more. Above all, compare the number of days required, which weighs more than the day rate.
How much does a monthly SEO retainer cost?
According to La Fabrique du Net, which analyzed hundreds of agency budgets in France, an ongoing retainer usually costs €800 to €1,700 excl. VAT per month. The amount depends mostly on the number of days actually spent on the account, the competition and the volume of content to produce. Always ask for that number of days before you sign.
Why does SEO pricing vary so much?
Because the same name covers very different services: an audit can be an automated export or three weeks of analysis. The price follows the time spent, which depends on site size, competition, scope, production volume and the provider's experience. Bring every quote down to a cost per actual day to compare them.
Can an SEO consultant guarantee a number one ranking on Google?
No. Google itself states, in its advice on hiring an SEO, that no one can guarantee a number one ranking in its results. A ranking guarantee usually covers a keyword with no competition. It is one of the most reliable red flags.
Freelance SEO consultant or agency: which should you choose?
With a freelance consultant, you talk directly to the person doing the work, with the output capacity of one person. An agency brings volume and several skill sets, with a contact who is sometimes not the person doing the work. For a small business getting started, an audit tells you whether the need is technical, editorial or about authority before you choose.
How much does link building cost?
Prices listed on link building marketplaces range from a few dozen to several hundred euros per sponsored article, depending on the authority and topic of the publisher's site. The link buying budget should be listed separately from fees, and each link should be chosen for its relevance rather than its price.
